Just under a year ago, I ventured to the beautiful country home of Chelsea's parents to do an engagement shoot with this young couple. Yesterday, these two tied the knot in front of celebratory family and friends at the same locale.

Before the ceremony, Chelsea's mom Louise lends a hand with the long laces of the dress.

And the earrings.

The veil was worn by Louise on her own wedding day. Emotions were running high as mom helped Chelsea put it on.

Chelsea is escorted to the ceremony site behind the home by mom and dad.

Bright sunshine, warm weather, and a lovely yard made for a great ceremony.

Chelsea and Chad exchange their vows.

The marriage begins with a kiss.

After doing some groups shots, we headed to the Muttart Conservatory and Irene Parlby park for some more formals and fun stuff. The bride, groom, and wedding party pose for a photo in the grass.

A bridal portrait of the lovely Chelsea.

Besides making a great team on Chelsea's wedding day, this group of pretty ladies were good at stopping traffic.

Chelsea and Chad look up and smile.

In just a few short months, Chelsea and Chad will be a mom and dad. With that in mind, we did a few maternity style shots along with the wedding formals.

The reception was held at the East Whitecroft Hall near Sherwood Park. Chelsea and Chad did a lot of kissing. Like many modern weddings, getting the bride and groom to kiss involves more than just tinking the glasses. The newlyweds plan was to make guests sing a love song if they wanted to see a kiss. Little did they realize, the reception hall was full of singers.

Chelsea and Chad react with a smile to one of many great speeches from the evening.

It was tough to find a dry eye in the crowd after Chelsea's parents gave their speech. This group hug took place immediately after.

Cake (or in this case, cupcake) cuttings can occasionally be messy business. The look on Chelsea's face should've been all the warning Chad needed.

Oops!

The couple shared a very happy first dance shortly after.

Which was followed by a touching father and daughter dance.

Thank you so much, Chelsea and Chad, for making me a part of your big day. After hearing your loving words for each other at the reception, I have no doubt in my mind that you two are perfect together. Best wishes now and in the near future when the newest addition to your family arrives. :) Cheers!

Portrait Session - Claire - July 16, 2007

Meet Claire. This handsome couple tied the knot on Saturday and celebrated through small towns ranging from Onoway to Gunn and Darwell. Though the weather was scorching hot, these two newlyweds had a whole lot of fun with their family and friends.

The day began at the mother of the groom's house in Onoway. The bride's shoes stand ready the day.

Bobby was ready for anything with two wedding dresses. Janna - the pretty lady in the photo above - became my wife last Saturday. Our wedding went off without a hitch (as it was an outdoor ceremony the lack of rain was much appreciated). Wedding photos will follow at some point when we get them back from our photographer. In the mean time, we've been honeymooning in Jasper National Park since Sunday. This morning, we rose at the crack of dawn and headed out to do a trash the dress session on Patricia and Pyramid lake in the park.

Here's Janna posing for a portrait in front of Patricia Lake. ME! And my wife - Janna. As you might've surmised by our 'trash the dress' honeymoon shots a couple of posts back, Janna and I tied the knot on June 23. While I offered to do the photography, Janna was rather insistent that I didn't. So - these photos WERE NOT taken by me. Credit must go to Carlo Marrazzo, our photographer who bravely agreed to shoot my wedding and allow me to do the processing and subsequent album. Thank you, Carlo!

Janna and I taking our vows at the Devonian Botanic Gardens. As some of you may already know, tomorrow is -my- wedding day. And as such, I have relatives coming in from various parts of the country. Fatima is my sister and resides in Winnipeg with her long time partner in crime Mike and son Jake. It's rare to see a decent photo of these guys so I offered to take them out on a shoot.

This handsome young fellow is my nephew Jake. He's looking pretty cool.

Of course mom and dad need to keep an eye on him.

Sunshine, green grass, and some feet that were dangerously close to my face.

Mike decided he needed a break.

A family portrait on the steps of the legislature.

Jake catches Fatima and Mike in the act.

Don't these two look good together? I knew from my engagement session with them last year that I was in for an entertaining wedding. Jeff's hilarious antics kept Chantelle and the rest of the guests laughing for much of the event.

The ceremony was held at the Devonian Botanic Gardens. Here, Chantelle's father escorts her down the grassy isle.

While thunderclouds loomed to the southwest, the vows were taken under bright, sunny skies.

Chantelle's son Liam provides the rings to the bride and groom.

I probably could've burned through an entire CF card on this couple's lengthy first kiss. Nice one, Chantelle and Jeff!

Though our formal session was cut short by a thunderstorm, we did manage several shots in the lovely Japanese Garden. Here the wedding party (and particularly the groom) strut their stuff.

The beautiful bride smiles for the camera.

The couple share a dip in the gardens.

A special moment and kiss in black and white..

The reception was held at the Moose Family Lodge. Kudos to the speakers for a great job. They kept the newlyweds in a combination of laughter and happy tears the whole duration.

Jeff prepares for the cake cutting ... with a dance?

The cake is cut.

Chantelle and Jeff share their first dance.

Later in the evening, the wedding party abducted Chantelle and refused to let her near Jeff unless he agreed to do a karaoke rendition of 'I Touch Myself'. It was hilarious - and some of the photos of this particular event will be for adult eyes only. :)

A candid moment right after the song.

Jeff goes looking for that elusive garter.

Chantelle and Jeff - you two were a hoot. This handsome couple was one of the most easy going I've had the pleasure of working with. Thanks to their laid back nature and a great supporting cast of family and friends, their wedding went off without a hitch leaving everyone with a smile.

Both the ceremony and formals took place at the legislature. Just after the ladies finished preparing inside, I took a few portraits of the beautiful bride in the halls.

The ceremony began a few minutes later on the front steps. He was one of the funniest ones I've heard in awhile. In many respects, this was a unique and enjoyable wedding as it incorporated asepcts of both traditional Chinese weddings and western ones. Beyond that, though, these two newlyweds were just plain fun to work with.

The day begins with Alice's mother assisting her with her dress and jewelery in preparation for one of two tea ceremonies.

When Cokey arrived, he was made to prove his worthiness for Alice via several (mostly humorous) tasks. One of them was singing a love song for Alice while doing pushups. No small feat with the temperature hovering around 30 degrees. Nice job, Cokey. :)

The tea ceremony begins surrounded by friends and family.

Alice quickly slipped back into her western dress and it was time to head to the church. The vehicle was adorned with these two likenesses of the couple.

The bride is escorted down the isle by her father.

Vows are exchanged during a heartwarming ceremony ...

... and a kiss begins the marriage.

We took some formals at the legislature under a hot sun. Fortunately, big trees provide for some big shade and happy smiles.

The newlyweds enjoy a little stroll.

The beautiful bride flashes her smile.

The reception was held at the Westin hotel downtown. Here, Cokey elicits some laughter from the crowd.

The couple lights up the dance floor ...

... and then the streets of downtown Edmonton.

And one more in colour.

Your wedding was a lot of fun, Alice and Cokey, and I thank you for entrusting your memories to me. Working with these two was entertaining and that's always a big plus.

We started at Hawrelak Park. It was a beautiful evening and there was enough gaps in the cloud to blanket us with some warm light.

The couple enjoys a little bit of fun stuff.

Jennifer and Rob share a moment amidst scenic stones and trees.

A bit later we were off to the Muttart grounds. Just a couple of months ago (in warmer times), I did an engagement session with Pam and Dean at Elk Island Park and featured their shots here. Their special day finally rolled around and I had the privilege of capturing it.

Angie got ready for her big day at her parent's house along with her bridesmaids and family.

The day began early in the morning when Pam began her preparations at her parent's home.

Her three bridesmaids (all sisters) worked diligently to help her into her dress.

Due to the day's schedule, we conducted formals before the ceremony. First stop was the Royal Museum where the entire wedding party struck a pose.

Oh my - and not even married yet.

Next stop was a warmer locale - Eaton Center in downtown Edmonton. The soon to be married couple shares a moment.

Dean wanted to do some shopping.

And so did Pam.

The stunning bride smiles for a portrait.

The ceremony was soon underway at the Delta Hotel in south Edmonton. Pam and her father walk down the aisle.

The vows are shared with heartfelt emotion.

And a kiss begins the marriage.

The reception was held on the top floor of the Delta. While winter in Alberta means fewer weddings, December still hosted two memorable ones.

The first one belonged to Tiffany and Jay. This young couple elected to get married in Jasper National Park - one of my favorite places in the world. Even in the winter, this park's vast beauty can boggle the mind.

Tiffany and her parents make an entrance to her ceremony at the Lobstick Lodge.

The room was beautifull decorated and featured a great view of the Rockies.

Being so close to Christmas, what would a wedding be without at least one Christmas tree nearby.

The vows are sealed with a kiss.

After the ceremony, we headed outdoors for a few photos. While not being frigid, a stiff wind made things ... challenging. I can't imagine what a foot of snow felt like on high heeled shoes and nylon covered feet. The ladies toughed it out, however, and we managed a few shots. Here, the newlywed couple share a moment on Patricia Lake.

The brave wedding party puts on their best smiles despite the lingering hypothermia.

The reception was filled with heartfelt speeches and lots of laughs.

Tiffany and Jay share their first dance.

Congratulations Tiffay and Jay. I thank you for the oppotunity to share in your wedding in such beautiful surroundings. Best of luck now and in the future. This spirited couple tied the knot at the Strathcona Wilderness Center Lodge - a cozy venue a few minutes east of Sherwood Park.

While the forecast called for sunshine on Saturday for much of the week, it didn't pan out (Environment Canada - you rock). In fact, there was a flurry or two happening when I arrived and a fresh coating of the white stuff gathered up on the ground. All that said, it didn't stop this couple from having some fun outside.

The couple shares a moment on a snow covered deck at the lodge.

Pam and Curtis embrace in the midst of a meadow adorned with snow and leaves.

A little bit of fall Alberta weather didn't affect the happy smiles of the couple and their immediate family.

The ceremony was held in front of a fireplace in one of the lower rooms in the lodge. After the ceremony, they made a quick exit through the same door and walked around the lodge. Being the devoted paparazzi wedding guy I am, I snuck out after them and grabbed a shot of this moment.

Congrulations Pam and Curtis - and thanks for the fun shoot. This was one of the most easy going and pleasant couples I've worked with - and their love for each other was worn on their sleeves.

We did a few formals first thing in the morning prior to the ceremony. As the day started with a thick coating of fog and chilly temperatures, we elected to do some of the shooting in the warmth of Edmonton's downtown core after beginning at the legislature.

Ron and Carrie flash each other a smile in sepia.

The wedding party struts their stuff down 103 Street.

The bride and groom eye each other up on an escalator ride.

The handsome wedding party looks up ... wayyyyyy up.

The gang chats it up in Manulife Place.

We soon headed to St. Paul's Anglican Church for the afternoon ceremony. Both the church and proceeding's were beautiful.

The couple exchanges their vows in front of family and guests.

Another happy couple is united in matrimony.

After the ceremony, we headed for Irene Parlby Park for some additional formals. The newlyweds share a moment amongst the autumn colours.

This has to be my funniest shot of the year. I'd lined the wedding party up and instructed them to run toward me when I counted down to one. Kyle, Ron's brother and a groomsman, apparently didn't check the flight plan from his position to mine. When I reached one on the count, they started running - Kyle directly into the low hanging branches in front of him. Fortunately, no groomsmen were actually hurt in the making of this photograph.

The reception was held at the Salvation Army center in St. Albert. Though it was abbreviated (consisting of dinner and speeches), it was no less emotional and fun. The cake cutting was a family affair, consisting of not just Ron and Carrie, but Ron's daughter Minnie.

Our tree chargin groomsman - Kyle - had the crowd choking with laughter during his toast to the groom.

Ron and Carrie, you two were one of the most laid back couples I'd ever worked with. Your love for each other is wonderfully evident and your family is destined to be happy. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your special day. Look at that photo again - Dave is one committed groom. One who commemorated his marriage and wedding day with a very unique tattoo.

Today, on Friday the 13th, I had a blast shooting the wedding of Shirley and Dave. Dave, originally from Yellowknife was on vacation with his bike when he met Shirley in her home of St. Louis. Sparks flew and the couple settled in the middle - right here in Edmonton.

The couple held their ceremony in La Boheme - a quiet and beautiful bed and breakfast with a ton of character. Below, Shirley waits in the couple's room for the ceremony to begin.

What would a Friday the 13th wedding be without the proper adornments? If you compare the skeleton ornament in the front with Dave's tattoo, you might note a resemblance.

Shirley meets Dave at the bottom of a staircase before proceeding to their ceremony.

The ceremony was held in a charming little room at La Boheme.

The couple shares their first kiss as husband and wife.

This wedding was as close to eloping as you could get without leaving the city you reside in. As their were no guests, myself and one of the La Boheme staff had to be witnesses. This is me signing the register.

After the ceremony the couple shared some champagne and kisses.

And then the first dance.

The newlyweds smile for the camera.

Tuxedos and bikes don't often go together - but today was an exception.

We proceeded to the Royal Museum for a few more shots before finishing for the evening.

Your wedding was a hoot, Shirley and Dave - thanks a bunch for letting me be a part of it. As the tattoo says, love never dies - and I get the feeling that'll hold true for the two of you. Jasmin and Mike, whose relationship began in England, will be tieing the knot next summer here in Edmonton. This happy, spirited couple were creative and loving and proved to be great fun on the shoot.

We started the shoot at Irene Parlby park near downtown Edmonton. The couple shared a cup of tea together while picnicing amongst the fallen leaves.

Jasmin and Mike share a moment together in the fleeting sunlight.

Mike shows off his best love hop on a stroll with his future wife.

We headed for Whyte Avenue after we left the park. Having grown up in the same neighbourhood and maintaining a friendship with the bride and her family for many years, I was elated that they'd ask me to provide for her wedding photography. As the day unfolded, there was lots of laughter, tears, and, more than anything, happiness.

Angie got ready for her big day at her parent's house along with her bridesmaids and family.

With a little help from her mother Anna, Angie gets into her dress.

Once the ladies were ready to go, we headed to Richmon Park Church for the ceremony. Angie was escorted down the isle by both parents.

Here, the young couple share a smile as they take their vows.

The deal is sealed with a kiss.

After the ceremony, we proceeded to the Muttart Conservatory where we did some formals both outdoors and in.

The beautiful bride poses for a portrait.

The reception was held at the Meridian Conference center on Edmonton's east end. The place was beautifully decorated (Angie's mom may have had something to do with that) and the cake was beautiful - the best I've seen this year.

Mark sneaks a kiss in behind Angie's bouquet.

The newlyweds share a loving first dance in front of a happy crowd.

Just prior to the dancing, Angie gave a beautiful speech thanking her parents for everything they'd done - dry eyes were hard to come by at the Meridian. With emotions heightened, Angie and her father Angelo shared one of the most touching father/daughter dances I've witnessed.

Anna insisted that Mark be blindfolded when he went hunting for the garter. Little did he know that they'd pull a switcheroo on him, having Angie sit on the lap of Mark's best man. What exactly did you find under there, Mark?

Thanks for letting me capture your day, Angie and Mark. This great looking couple will be getting married during the holiday season this year and wanted to ensure they had some shots that didn't include snow. We did the shoot in Astotin Lake in Elk Island National Park - taking advantage of a lovely lake, beach, and sunset sky.

Early on, I suggested they remove their footwear and let their feet dangle in the water. I suspect the water was a bit cold but it sure looks like they didn't notice.

The couple enjoys the view from the shore.

A happy moment lit with late evening light.

Here, the photogenic Pam smiles for the camera as her future husband admires.

Thanks for the shoot, you two - you were both pleasant and fun to work with. And just in time for the wedding of Pam and Brennan. This happy couple tied the knot at Sunridge Ski Area on Saturday in front of a celubrius (salute, Bill) group of friends and family. While not necessarily swimsuit weather, the temperature was warm and the sun shined brightly.

The couple shares a smile as the ceremony gets underway.

The marriage was completed with a long, passionate kiss ... no quick smooch for these two.

The ceremony was held outdoors on the deck of the Sunridge ski lodge. Eight days ago the temperature reached 30. And now? Well.. I guess if you ski you might be excited. It IS supposed to get better by the end of the week. But then again, if I had a nickel for every time the weather people were wrong...

Yesterday, I did an engagement shoot with Chelsea and Chad. This pleasant couple was a lot of fun and even rolled around in the grass for me despite its relative dampness. As having a roof nearby when the weather is inclement is always a good idea, we decided to shoot at Chelsea's parent's beautiful acreage a bit east of the city. As it turns out, it made for a great location.

We started the shoot indoors so as to avoid the extra rosy cheeks that would've undoubtedly come had we started outside.

Soon after, we moved outside where the couple cuddled in the grass.

No photographer worth his salt could ignore an old wooden wagon wheel. This friendly couple hails from Victoria, BC but tied the knot in Edmonton so as to be close to the majority of their family. Above the handsome couple descends the stairs of one of the legislature buildings.

The couple held their ceremony at the Margaret Ziedler Star Theatre in the Telus World of Science (formally known as Odyssium). This was a great venue for a ceremony - lots of ambience and cool lighting.

Below, the vows are sealed with the couple's first kiss.

After the ceremony, we proceeded to the legislature grounds for formals. The hot sunny day and long weekend date resulted in what had to be a record number of wedding parties there (I estimate 20-25). Luckily the grounds are sizable and provides plenty of different shooting opportunies. Below is a shot on one of the many stairways on the grounds.

The reception was held at St. Michael's Parish hall. The decorating was lovely, the food was great, and the mood festive. With the help of some ideal weather, a fun group of family and friends, and some lovely venues, a great time was had by all.

Bridal preparation began at Rita's Hair Design in St. Alberta at 8:30 am. By the time I left Edmonton, rain was falling in buckets. No matter how many times one has been published, magazine covers never cease to make a photographer happy.

On another note, I'll be shooting weddings both Friday and Saturday this long weekend. Mix a laid back, happy couple who are intent on enjoying their wedding day with a light hearted wedding party and you get just that. Neither Holly nor Brian showed the slightest hint of stress today. What's more, they were complimented by a cast of bridesmaids and groomsmen who refused to have anything but a good time.

After Holly and Brian exchanged vows in the afternoon, we headed to both Irene Parlby park and the Muttart Conservatory grounds for some formal shooting. While being quite small, Bentley is a town full of character and friendly small town atmosphere. As Brent grew up there, it made the perfect location for his wedding.

The ceremony itself took place in a cozy church filled with happy friends and family.

After a touching ceremony where Amanda and Brent exchanged their own heartfelt vows, we headed out to nearby canola field that was sporting a full bloom. Despite the abundance of couples, we managed some great shots around the periphery while waiting our turn on -the stairs-.

It was a pleasure working with both the bride and groom who were relaxed and enjoying the day as it came. The shot above was taken just before sunset on the day of the event at the couple's reception venue - the Lakeshore Golf Course. Besides providing lovely, photogenic light, the setting of the sun provided a welcomed drop in temperature after a scorching day.

Check out these beautiful ladies - sorry guys, you'll get no contact information from me. Originally from Alberta, Stephanie and Sandy will be holding their wedding in Edmonton next year.

Our evening began at Hawrelak Park before we set off for the Muttart Conservatory. Rain, wind ... general late spring ugliness. But on Tim and Sheena's big day the sky was bright blue and the wind soothing.

The wedding was a happy one and it show's in the photos. Tim and Sheena are a warm and friendly couple and their wedding party both helpful and alot of fun. Here's a photo of her:

Isn't she lovely? :)

Anyway - back to the topic at hand. Due to the advice of various wedding websites, I've noticed that to alot of engaged couples, the process of finding a photographer has become more complex than it need be. I know the three page questionaire you've pulled from your favorite wedding website seems very well written but do you really care if they use a fish eye lens or shoot medium format? If the photographer detailed every piece of equipment in his/her bag, would you have any idea what they were talking about? For most of you, its probably safe to assume the answer is no. So, that all being said, here are the three guildlines that I'm going to use in picking my photographer.

1) Do I like their work?

Do their sample photos stir me emotionally.. make me feel like I was part of that particular wedding? I'm not talking about one shot or one wedding... I want to see samples from various weddings that show the photographer has both the technical skills and artistic eyes to come up with consistently solid photos. I'm not going to analyze every photo - I'm simply going to scan each of them and see if I get that 'happy' feeling from looking.

2) Does their price suit my budget?

Like many folks, I have to consider the wedding budget in all aspects of wedding planning - including the photography. With that in mind, I'm going to establish a range of prices I'm willing to pay before I begin contacting photographers. If they're prices are too high, I won't bother contacting them (I'm not the type to haggle). Nor will I if they're too low (although there are exceptions, low prices often mean a lower standard of service or quality). If the price fits and the work looks good ... we move to the final qualification.

3) Do I like the person?

First off, when I attend a consultation, it better be with the actual person or persons who will be photographing my wedding or there's no deal. Feeling comfortable with and liking the photographer is critical. If you don't like the person, you'll look more like a couple of hostages in your photos than a happy bride and groom. The person I'm looking for will be easy to talk to, laid back, and will show interest in learning more about my fiance and I. If they're able to come across like this, I'll feel alot more comfortable and happy having this person around all day at my wedding and it'll show in the final product.

That's it that's all! Well ok - maybe not. AHA you say.. there is more. Actually, I also want to make sure that the photographer has a full set of backup equipment - just in case. Nobody wants to gamble on Uncle Jim getting great photos when the photographers shutter refuses to fire.

THAT is how I'll be selecting a photographer. Really, it's THAT simple.

Hope this helps.

Basic Retouching

Every wedding package I offer comes with basic retouching on every image delivered. What the heck is basic retouching you might ask? Well, here's the deal. Due to various factors such as lighting and digital sensor characteristics, photos straight out of the camera often require processing in order to ensure ultimate quality.

Here's an example of a first dance photo straight from the camera.

It's not horrible but theirs an obvious yellow/orange colour cast to it and the tones are a bit flat overall.

This is the image after basic retouching.

As you can see, the colours have been corrected and the contrast is a bit punchier.

Beyond basic retouching, I also select a dozen or so images from the wedding and apply additional retouching as seen below.

In this case, I converted the image to black and white and added some vignetting in order to draw the eye more firmly to the happy couple.

Hello gang,

Welcome to the first entry in my blog!

My name is Jason Kasumovic. I'm a photographer from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. What do I photographer, you ask? What don't I photograph is probably the better question. Weddings, portraits, stock, commercial, scenic, and wildlife all make the list... and I love them all equally.

Photography is a powerful form of expression and, for me, a passionate one. Ensuring the composition, light, colour, focus, and style of the final image is JUST right is all part of a process that I love. Whether I'm standing on the shores of a beautiful, still lake as the sun peaks over the horizon at 5:30 am or capturing the vivid emotion of a happy couple's special moments on their wedding day, I'm loving every moment.

I've been asked more than once what -my- favorite scenic shot is. That's a toughy.. each of the scenic photos on my site has fond memories associated with it. But I have to go with this one:

It was a beautiful, winter evening, of course. But beyond that, the unique architecture of the Muttart Conservatory in Edmonton combined with the lovely cloud patterns and wide angle perspective makes this shot seem almost out of this world. In colour, it worked - in black and white, it worked even better.

So that's it for now. Keep checking back as there'll be more updates (at least weekly). And brides to be that have booked my wedding photography services this year - this might be a great spot to see some sneak peaks of your photos. ;)

Bye for now!
